Exploring Papuma Beach: Hidden Gem in Jember, East Java

If you're planning to escape the city and dive into a nature-filled coastal trip, Papuma Beach in Jember, East Java, might just be your perfect destination. Nestled in Lojejer Village, Wuluhan District, this beach is often referred to as Tanjung Papuma—‘tanjung’ meaning a cape that juts out into the sea.

Fun fact: Papuma stands for "Pasir Putih Malikan" (Malikan White Sand), a name given by Perhutani when they opened the area.

Getting There

From downtown Jember, the drive to Papuma Beach is around 1 hour (about 40 kilometers). The route is fairly straightforward: you’ll pass through Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan Semeru, Jalan Jember Ambulu, Jalan Watu Ulo, Jalan Papuma, and finally reach the beach area. The roads are mostly paved, though the last few kilometers may be a bit bumpy, so drive carefully.

You can take a private car or motorbike—public transportation is limited in this area. If you're up for it, renting a motorbike gives you the freedom to explore nearby spots too.

Entrance Fees and Costs

As of now, the entrance fee to Papuma Beach is around IDR 20,000–30,000 (around $1.50–$2 USD) per person. Parking fees may apply (around IDR 5,000–10,000), and if you want to rent a boat or buy seafood, bring some extra cash. The total cost for a day trip—including meals and snacks—can be under IDR 100,000 (about $6 USD), making it a budget-friendly escape.

The Experience

Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted with a coastline that looks like something straight out of a painting. The sea here is calm and clean, with a soft gradient of greenish-blue that shines like emerald when viewed from above—especially from the top of Bukit Siti Hinggil.

One of the most unique aspects of Papuma Beach is the cluster of seven massive coral rocks scattered across the shore and the sea. Each one has its own name, inspired by characters from traditional Javanese wayang (shadow puppets)—including Batara Guru, Kresna, Narada, and Nusa Barong. These rocky islands are perfect for photography lovers, especially during sunrise and sunset.

You can swim, play with the waves, explore the rocks, or simply sit on the warm white sand. If you're feeling adventurous, take a boat ride with local fishermen to get a closer look at the corals and nearby coves.

Feeling hungry? You can enjoy fresh seafood straight from the boats. Around 11 AM to 1 PM, fishermen return with their catch, and you can buy fish and have it grilled at one of the warungs nearby. The grilled fish, combined with the sea breeze and the sound of the waves, is an unbeatable combo.

Camping is another highlight. The beach is open 24 hours, and many visitors choose to pitch a tent for the night. The sea breeze at night is warm, and during the day, it’s surprisingly cool—perfect for outdoor stays.
